Porto da Cruz rum factory

« Visit to one of Madeira's rum factories »

A visit to one of the oldest distilleries on Madeira Island is undoubtedly one of the must-do's if you are visiting Porto Da Cruz. In Portuguese: Destilaria Engenhos do Norte.

Ideally located near the tourist area of the village, next to the beaches, swimming pools and bar, you will have the opportunity to discover for free the process of making white rum from sugar cane. You will discover the different machines and industrial equipment that allow the making of this alcohol. However, the visit is quite short.

You can then go to the shop for a tasting (for a fee) and/or to buy some bottles of rum. The price offered seems to be more interesting than those charged in the capital Funchal.

Madeira Rum

White rum made from sugar cane is drunk as a cocktail in Madeira: the poncha. This is a typical Madeiran drink that is a must try. A cocktail mixing rum and fruit juice: lemon, orange juice or passion fruit. You can of course find it in the bars of the island, you can taste it on the spot or take it with you.
