Caniçal, village in Madeira

Caniçal is a freguesia (i.e. a village) located near Machico, east of the Isla de los Flores. A fishing village with an important industrial area, it was the former centre of the whaling industry until the ban on whaling in 1981. Today, this industrial area is home to one of the most important ports in Madeira, especially for tuna fishing.

Due to its former activity of fishing for the bala, it is possible to visit the Whale Museum in Caniçal: a museum whose main mission is to preserve the heritage of whaling, but also to learn about this cetacean as well as the marine environment, and the scientific projects related to it.

The freguesia of Caniçal is also a tourist village, ideally located right next to the São Lourenço point: a rare desert landscape of the volcanic island and one of Madeira's great classics with its steep cliffs, not to be missed despite the large number of tourists. Before arriving on the peninsula, you can stop at the small beach of Caniçal da Prainha, upstream of the Quinta Do Lorde tourist complex.
