When I started my research on the Madeira laurel forest, I immediately came across dozens and dozens of photos of trees in the mist. A special, almost supernatural atmosphere. The subtropical climate of Madeira in this mountainous area makes the forest humid and offers a dense and varied flora. As someone who loves photography, and especially water features, I know that there is a lot to enjoy in Madeira.
But back to the point, there is something that really struck me in the different photos of the ancestral laurels that I discovered, it's this destructured side of the trees, and add to that an intense fog and you get a totally magical place to photograph. Many amateur photographers and artists share their work, and the Fanal forest is a particularly ideal place for photography, between landscapes in the fog and the mountain.
This is how I discovered the artist Michael Schlegel. He is a German photographer who has a very particular style. His black and white shots are just breathtaking, intoxicating, and he always has a connection with nature, wind, fog, water. His work in Madeira in 2019 is stunning and I invite you to visit his website michaelschlegel.com to discover this artist and his gallery "Fanal".
