How to get to Porto Moniz?

If you want to visit or spend a few days holiday in Porto Moniz, there are several possibilities. However, the town of natural pools is located in the extreme northwest of Madeira Island, completely opposite the capital, about 50 km away. For a long time the road network was not optimal. Today the expressway makes accessibility to the city much more convenient.

By using public transport:

There are two bus lines that can take you to your destination: line 139 and line 150.

Line 139 has the advantage of departing from Funchal. It runs along the south coast from Camara de Lobos to Ribeira Brava and then into the heart of the volcanic island, passing through Encumeada to the north coast and the town of São Vicente. The bus line then runs along the north coast to Seixal and finally to the town of Porto Moniz. The line ends at Achadas Da Cruz, which can be convenient if you want to hike the Levada do Moinho. The journey, with many stops, takes about 3.5 hours and costs about €6-7 per person.

Line 150 starts in São Vicente. It is shorter and runs along the north coast of the island. The journey passes through VE 2 and takes about 1 hour for €3 per person. The village of Achadas da Cruz is also served.

With your rental car:

From Funchal, the fastest route is along the same roads as the 139 line and takes only 50 minutes:

VR1 from Funchal to Ribeira Brava
    VE4 to São Vicente
then VE2 to Seixal and Porto Moniz.

The VE2 expressway is nicknamed the Gold Road because of its cost: it passes through many tunnels and is very often located on the side of a cliff. It replaces the old regional road, which is closed in places because of dangerous spots.

There are, of course, other roads and routes, such as the ER101 from the southwest coast, or the ER110 (or ER209) if you want to spend some time in the centre of the island, for example through the Laurisilva forest. The journey time is longer, however. It all depends on your road book. In any case, this article shows the importance of having your own rental car to enjoy complete freedom on the island and not to waste too much time in transport.
