More of a walk than a hike, but what a walk! Starting from the Ribeiro Frio Natural Forest Park, this short hike takes us to an exceptional viewpoint, one of the most beautiful spots in Madeira! In the background, the Faial valley and its balconies, the village of Faial and Penha de Águia, a huge volcanic hillock.
The route of the PR11 hike
From the car park, where you can see some trout aquaculture ponds, you head northwest along the end of the Levada do Furado. Very quickly, next to Rocha da Moitada, we reach the junction with the Levada do Juncal.
The short route takes us along this levada, through the laurissilva forest, until we reach the village of Ribeiro Frio again, including the Flor da Selva café. A little further on, the path splits in two. You have to turn left, go a little deeper into the forest to reach this magnificent balcões viewpoint.
